Case Study: Insurable — Mapping California’s Home-Insurance Non-Renewal Crisis

Insurable was a live atlas of California’s home-insurance non-renewal crisis, published on Alumniyat.com — our former product lab, now part of Webmaster & More. Enter your area and it showed what the situation looked like from your ZIP code: which carriers were still writing policies, what the FAIR Plan would roughly cost, and a practical what-to-do-next sequence if you’d been dropped.

Atlas thinking

Insurable was a sibling of our FireGrade tool but answered a different question. FireGrade asked “what should I do?”; Insurable asked “what is true where I live?” Statewide crises read as abstractions until you see your own ZIP code. An atlas — data organized by place — turns news into something personal and checkable, which is why local data tools consistently out-engage general articles.

How it was built

A static page with client-side JavaScript, consistent with the whole lab: no backend, no accounts, sources cited. The work was in collecting and normalizing scattered public information — carrier behavior, FAIR Plan pricing structure, regulatory changes — into a shape a simple interface could query by location.

What we learned

Local beats general. The same information organized by ZIP is dramatically more compelling than a statewide summary. If your audience is local — and for most of our clients in Los Angeles, it is — build for the question “what about my street?”

Data freshness is the product. An atlas of a moving crisis is only as good as its last update. We designed for cheap updates (swap one data file), and that discipline is the difference between a live tool and an embarrassment.

Two small tools can beat one big one. Keeping Insurable (the map) and FireGrade (the playbook) separate kept each page focused and fast, with clear cross-links — a pattern we now recommend over mega-tools.

For local businesses

If your customers make decisions that vary by neighborhood — insurance, real estate, permits, schools, services — a location-aware lookup on your site is a durable advantage. We build them custom, fast, and maintainable.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Insurable?

Alumniyat Tools was consolidated into Webmaster & More in July 2026; Insurable was retired and its URL now points to this case study.

Was it connected to any insurer?

No — independent and information-only, with sources cited on the page.

Can you build a data atlas for my business?

Yes — if useful public data exists for your field, we can turn it into a local lookup your customers actually use.
