Case Study: Bayt — a Human-Verified Arabic Poetry Library for Permanent Ink
Bayt was the most unusual tool in our lab: a curated library of authentic Arabic poetry verses for people considering permanent uses — tattoos, engraving, dedications — published on Alumniyat.com, our former product lab, now part of Webmaster & More. Every verse was verified by humans against its source, with attribution, meaning, and correct rendering. No machine translation, because a mistranslated verse in permanent ink is a small tragedy that happens constantly.
The problem
Search for “Arabic tattoo” horror stories and you’ll find galleries of them: reversed letterforms, disconnected letters, translations that say something other than intended. Arabic script is cursive and contextual — letters change shape by position — so a phrase pasted from a translation tool into a design app frequently breaks. The fix isn’t better software; it’s verification by people who read the language and know the poetry.
How it was built
A static page presenting a curated verse library — each entry with the original Arabic, transliteration, verified translation, poet attribution, and notes on rendering. Serving Arabic properly meant real attention to typography: correct fonts, right-to-left layout, and testing that the script renders as connected calligraphy everywhere it appears.
What we learned
Curation is a product. Bayt had no algorithm and needed none. A small library where every entry is guaranteed correct beats an infinite library that’s probably right. In the AI era, “verified by a human who knows” is becoming a premium feature.
Multilingual sites fail in the details. RTL layout, font fallbacks, and mixed-direction text are where most Arabic-English sites quietly break. We carry those lessons into every bilingual project we build.
Emotional stakes change design. Someone choosing words for permanent ink reads slowly and wants reassurance, sources, and meaning — a different pace than any calculator we built.
